William McGough Obituary

William Mike McGough, age 77, of Lumberton, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. He was born in Troy, Alabama, on February 21, 1947, to William Lamar and Bunchie Harris McGough.

Fearless and steadfast, Mike was a man whose very existence was a testament to love, strength, and unwavering devotion. A middle child of three, he was the anchor for his best friends and brothers, Mack and Mark. Books could be written, and songs composed about the adventures they shared; they were survivors. The stories that are known of his youth were so unique and fabulous, it is the stuff of legends, and yet it was real, because he was real. Always a steady, constant presence, he was the lifeline for his children, always there for them with support and help. He lived life to its fullest, loved as deeply as a brother and father could, and served those around him. When he became a grandfather, his grandchildren were blessed with that same affection that defined Mike. Every birthday, every Christmas, each of the family could expect a card, decorated and personalized, with cash in each. He was a proud veteran, serving honorably in the United States Air Force; he loved his country. Being strong of heart and tough of mind, molded by the trials of life, served Mike well, yet when he stepped into church, the softness that lay in his spirit manifested in tearful, sincere worship to the One he knew had kept him throughout his life, the Lord Jesus. Mike McGough leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith; a man whose life story will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Left to honor his memory are sons, William McGough and wife, Jennifer, Marty McGough and wife, Tara, Jerry Alan Fonville, James “Dinky” Fonville and wife, Amy; daughters, Dawn Clark and husband, Trey, and Cindy McInnis; brothers, Mack McGough and Mark McGough; grandchildren, April Ogden and husband, Cullen, Autumn Unruh and husband, Micah, Torin McGough, Brady Wells, Dylan McGough and wife, Lauren, Matti Scroggs and husband, Kade, Baylee Flowers, Brooklyn Clark, Hannah Fonville, Dylan Fonville, Tanner Fonville, Megan McCarty and husband, Gatlyn, Shaon David Laughlin, and Morgan Davis; 9 great-grandchildren; his canine companion, Sophie; and a host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.
