Robert Ray Tanton Sr., age 72, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026. He was born to Herbert and Eula Mae Loftin Tanton on August 19, 1953, in Evadale, TX.
A proud son of the South and a man who lived life on his own terms, he was a good fellow through and through; steady, loyal, and full of character. Robert had a soft spot for taking apart old cars. He could be downright ornery at times, but anyone who knew him understood that beneath that rough edge was good heart. He made his home on the river, a place that suited him perfectly. There he spent his days hunting, fishing, and soaking in the outdoors. If there was a grill going, Robert was probably cooking up some barbecue chicken. He had a deep bond with his dog, a companion who rarely left his side. Robert married the love of his life, Rita, after the two met at her workplace. Their story was one of those simple, steady romances. They shared sixteen years of marriage and were blessed with three children. Raised as a Christian, Robert tried to do right by the people around him. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, loyalty, and family. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Robert Ray Tanton Jr., Billy Jack Tanton, and Eric Hause and wife, Jennifer; daughter, Robyn Kay Tanton and Tina Coudrain and husband, Russell; brothers, Louis Tanton and wife, Melody and Bob Canton; grandchildren, Alexis, Emily, and Sofia; and a host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.
Preceding Robert in death is his wife, Rita Helen Tanton; his parents; brothers, James Tanton, David Tanton, and Henry Lee Tanton; sisters, Lillie McCanally and Emma Peters; and granddaughter, Abbigail Coudrain.
