R.C. McFarland

R.C. McFarland Jr., age 87, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. He was born on April 14, 1937, in Port Arthur, TX, to R.C. McFarland Sr., and Carmen Theriot McFarland.

A man whose heart was as generous as it was strong, he was born with a special measure of strength of character and will. R. C. moved to Buna before high school, where he quickly became an accomplished athlete and a popular young man. Under the guidance of the renowned Coach Cotton Robinson, R. C. and his teammates achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the Texas state basketball tournaments for four consecutive years. R. C.'s charisma extended beyond the basketball court; he was voted "Most Handsome" and caught the eye of a young lady named Joanne, with whom he shared a lifelong love story. Next to Joanne, he had a deep and passionate love affair with food. The man loved food; beef, seafood, french fries, fresh fruits and vegetables. As a shipbuilder, he worked tirelessly to provide for and support them. In his late 30s, R. C. faced a life-altering work accident that left him with a grim prognosis: he would never walk again. However, true to his indomitable spirit, R. C. simply replied, "watch me," and defied all odds. His resilience and determination became a testament to his inner strength. A farm boy at heart, R. C. took great pleasure in gardening, tending to his plants with meticulous care. After retiring, he and his beloved Joanne embarked on adventures across 46 states, creating countless cherished memories together. R. C. was a devout Christian, and his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He spiritually mentored many young people through various church programs, leaving a lasting impact on their lives. R. C.'s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the power of love, determination, and unwavering faith.

Left to honor his memory is his beloved wife, Joanne McFarland; daughter, Susan Renee Willis and husband, Rocky; sister, Maude Malone; grandchildren, Brandon Willis and wife, Ashley, Andrea Maher, and B. E. Simmons III; great grandchildren, Kate, Hailey, Hannah, Sean and Preston; as well as host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.

Preceding R.C. in death are his parents; son, David Kent McFarland; daughter, Debra Lynn Clark; sister, Willeva Mancill; and brother in law, John A. Malone.
