Mrs. Peggy Ernestine (Whisenhant) Tevis, 86, of Lumberton, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022. Peggy was born in Livingston on June 1, 1935, to Ernest Whisenhant and Tony (Ezer) Whisenhant. Peggy was raised one of three children and spent her life here in the Southeast Texas area. A devoted homemaker and mother, caring for others was always what Peggy felt her purpose in life was. She deeply loved her family and her God above all else. Peggy never really met a stranger in her life, and was always willing to share her testimony with others whenever she could, taking great care and joy in helping others see the love that Jesus has for all. When not showing the love of God to those around her, you’d likely find Peggy in the kitchen cooking up a meal for anyone who wanted it or on her swing outside listening to the birds. Grandma to everyone, Peggy enjoyed being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as often as possible. A true matriarch of her family, Peggy’s love, devotion, guidance, and leadership will be deeply missed by all those who loved her.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Claire Ellender of Lumberton; her sister, Vivian Overstreet and husband Winston; her sister-in-law JoAnn Whisenhant; her grandchildren, Lauren and husband Thomas "Tripp" Jr., Leslie and husband Andrew, Justin, and Miranda; and her great-grandchildren, Thomas "Tripp" III., Beckham, Jackson, Connor, and Ava; her sisters in the Lord that loved her so; as well as numerous extended family members, loved ones, and friends over the years.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon Bryan Tevis; her children, Kenneth Tevis and Arnie Tevis; and her brother, Gene Whisenhant.
A graveside service honoring Peggy's life will be held at Magnolia Hill Cemetery in Segno, Texas on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
