Leonard Dwyer Gunther

Leonard Dwyer Gunther passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, in the comforting care of his family. Born April 12, 1940, Leonard’s 85 years of life were full, spirited and well lived. He was a man who never met a stranger, always ready with a helping hand, a good story, a hearty laugh and, more often than not with a cold beer in hand.

Leonard proudly worked at the Texas Highway Department for over 30 years. His passion, however, was restoring vintage cars, anything outdoors and spending time with family and friends. After retirement, he could easily be found in his shop helping family or friend work on their vehicle or just passing time with anyone willing to sit and listen. His quick wit, kind heart, and easygoing nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Known affectionately by many names—Stroker, Dude, and Gunther to name a few — Leonard was most proud to be called Dad, Grandpa, Paw Paw, or simply my friend.

Leonard is survived by his daughters, Kim Krueger of Athens, TX, and Helen Alexander and husband Terry of Spring, TX. He was grandfather to Lindsay Whitten of Kountze, Paul Vaughn of Kemah, Kasie Vaughn of Cleveland, and Taylor Alexander of Spring. Leonard also leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Austin, Madilyn, Michael, Ryan, Avery, and Clair, along with countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen Thompson Gunther, and his sister, Margaret Carlin.

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by all who knew him.
