John Walters Obituary

John Oscar Walters, 79, of China, Texas, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2026. He was born on January 10, 1947, in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Leo and Edna Walters.

John was a proud veteran who served two tours during the Vietnam War. During his final tour, he survived a helicopter crash that resulted in a broken back. That experience was only one example of the strength and resilience that would define him throughout his life. To his family, he was simply one of the toughest men they had ever known.

John was a man of principle who believed strongly that a person’s word mattered. If you said you’d do something, you did it. He was straightforward, honest, and never left anyone wondering where they stood with him. John lived life on his own terms, standing firmly in what he believed was right and valuing loyalty, respect, and the importance of keeping his word. An avid outdoorsman, John loved hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time in the woods. Some of his greatest joys came from sharing those experiences with his children and grandchildren, taking them camping and deer hunting and passing along his love of the outdoors.

John also loved working with his hands and tinkering with different projects. He enjoyed leatherwork, reloading ammunition, and photography and was rarely without something that captured his interest or allowed him to create. After the passing of his beloved wife, Debbie, John’s dog, Skeeter, became his constant companion and best friend. The two shared an incredibly special bond and were rarely apart. Skeeter went just about everywhere John went, and in many ways, they looked after one another.

Above all, John loved his family. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, especially when those moments involved being together outdoors, at deer camp, or simply enjoying one another’s company.

Left to cherish John’s memory are his sons, Matthews Walters and wife, Jennifer, and Robert Bertrand and partner, Bonnie; daughters, Stephanie Dietz and husband, Timothy, Tina Shaw, Michelle Walters, Melanie Macias and husband, Brian, and Heather Aragon and husband, Nathan; brother, Joe Walters; sister, Doris Murray; 14 grandchildren;11 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debbie Lee Walters; his parents, Leo and Edna Walters; brothers, Bill Walters and James Walters; and sisters, Ruth Hinton and Alice Daniels.

John will be remembered for his strength, honesty, unwavering principles, love of the outdoors, and deep devotion to his family. His stories, lessons, and memories will continue to live on through the generations who loved him.
