John Euell Sowell, age 74, of Vidor, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. He was born in Beaumont, TX, on October 2, 1949, to Brady and Lorene Ficken Sowell.
Strong of will, mind, and heart, John was intentional in purpose and devoted to his duty. He gave whenever he could, worked hard to provide for those he loved, and faced the hills and valleys of life without fear. There was no endeavor or investment he would undertake if it did not make money or food. He was all in, and though stubborn at times, his family and friends knew that he was there, readily, with strength and love. John enjoyed bestowing nicknames on people that he found worthy, and though his favorite word was “idiot”, he was often more creative in his name crafting. Serving proudly in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, John was highly decorated, earning a Purple Heart. After joining his heart with his beloved, Etta, on August 13, 1971, they were blessed with two sons. John’s life was simple yet exceptional, he lived it well and fully. To all his loved ones, he will forever remain as a beacon of strength, courage, and loyalty to their hearts.
Left to honor his memory is his wife, Etta Johnson Sowell; sons, Kirk Harliss Sowell and Eric Brady Sowell and wife Kathryn; grandchildren, Jonathan, Abigail, and Samuel; brother, Charles Wayne Sowell and wife, Regina; and sisters-in-law, Charlotte Sowell and Suzy Cain and husband, C.H.; and numerous extended family, friends and loved ones.
Preceding John in death are his parents, and brother, Joe Brady Sowell.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lumberton Family Funeral Home.
