James "Rocky" Ray Phelps

James “Rocky” Ray Phelps, age 73, of Lumberton, TX, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. He was born on August 10, 1951, in Beaumont, TX to Jack and Helen Bernice Phelps. 

A beloved father, husband, teacher, and storyteller, known for his quick wit and magnetic charm, James was the kind of man who could light up any room, not just with laughter, but with warmth and genuine connection. Born with a spirit for adventure and a knack for mischief, James turned a teenage accident into one of his signature tales, wearing his eye patch not just as a badge of resilience, but as a source of countless stories that made people lean in with curiosity and leave grinning. He had a way of turning the ordinary into the heroic. A proud father, he poured his heart into his daughters and his son, never missing a game, a milestone, or a moment to show his love. To be his daughter was to be adored, celebrated, and to know the unwavering support only he could give. Before becoming the well-loved shop teacher at Lumberton High School, Rocky worked as a welder. In the shop classroom, he forged not just metal, but confidence and curiosity in his students, teaching them how to build barbecue pits, swing sets, and establishing a few meaningful traditions for Lumberton High School. His retirement in 2012 marked the end of an era, but his impact is still felt by many of his former students. It was in Tennessee where fate introduced Rocky to Sharon, the love of his life. Enchanted by her beauty and long legs, Rocky knew he’d found something special. Their love blossomed into a partnership full of laughter and devotion. Rocky loved his momma, and their bond was special. He cherished simplicity and quietness; spending time at home, watching Westerns or his favorite shows, surrounded by the comforts of family and familiarity. Rocky lived life boldly, loved fiercely, and made memories out of the small things, laughter out of setbacks, and memories that will linger in every heart he touched.

Left to honor his memory are his children, Sarah Potter and husband, Brandon, Danielle Phelps and fiancé, KC Mitchell, and Timothy Pessink and wife, Sarah; grandchildren, Aidan Potter, Zoe Potter, Patrick Pessink, Lina Pessink, and Ashlynn Pessink; as well as many other loved ones and friends.

Preceding Rocky in death are his parents and wife, Sharon Phelps.
