James Kelly Svoboda, age 65, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2024. He was born in Port Arthur, TX, on January 30, 1959, to Edwin Joseph and Angela Theresa Chmelik Svoboda.
Jimmy lived a life that left an indelible mark on everyone he met. An all-world blue-chip high school football recruit in 1977, he was voted best personality in his class, reflecting his engaging and vibrant nature. His athletic prowess drew the attention of top schools nationwide, with the coach of Notre Dame even visiting his home to recruit him. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he played football alongside the legendary Earl Campbell and would go on to earn many achievements. After a knee injury, Jimmy transferred to Lamar University, where he earned a degree in education and his masters in Kinesiology. He married the love of his life, Donna Gail Russo, whom he affectionately called "sweetheart" and "honey," at St. Mary's Catholic Church on June 22, 1985.
Jimmy dedicated many years and took great joy in working with his students, particularly in coaching football. As a member of Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Lumberton, Jimmy's strong faith was a guiding force in his life. He was known for his strength, fearlessness, intelligence, and willingness to try new things without concern for others' opinions. His quirky, goofy nature and encouragement were hallmarks of his personality, always reminding others, "you don't have to be perfect."
Jimmy's legacy of love, encouragement, and unyielding spirit will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
