Hazel Burge Obituary

Hazel Poe Burge, 83, of Lumberton passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024, at her home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with dementia. She was born on July 15, 1940, in Waterford, MS to Howard Montgomery and Mamie Poe.

She was a graduate of Memphis Tennessee High School in 1959. She met and married the love of her life, Dan Burge, in 1960. She gave birth to her daughter, DeeAnn, in 1961 and Lynda, in 1964. Hazel had a successful career at the Texas Department of Transportation where she happily retired from in 1995. After her retirement is when all of the fun began, she was able to spend time with her family and grandchildren at their farm in San Augustine, Tx and at their Lake House on Sam Rayburn. Most everyone knew her as "Maw Maw" and she wore that name proudly, especially once her great grandchildren came along.

Hazel enjoyed cooking and canning, she made some of the best mayhaw jelly in all of Hardin County. She also loved quilting, being outdoors hunting and fishing, farming and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years she would be found on her front porch sitting in her porch swing and was always up for a good visit. She is going to be dearly missed.

Left to honor her memory is her daughter, DeeAnn Burge of Lumberton; siblings, Larry Poe, Jimmy Poe and Richard Poe of Lumberton; grandchildren, Dillon Jordan, Brandon Bodden and Haylee Bodden of Lumberton and Lyndi Allien of Kountze; great-grandchildren, Korbyn Elkins, Braylee Bodden, Asher Allien and Brynn Bodden; and a host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dan "Buddy" Burge; parents, Howard Montgomery and Mamie; daughter, Lynda Jordan; siblings, Betty Williams, Gerald Poe, Joy Parks, and Kenneth Poe.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dillon Jordan, Brandon Bodden, Michael Morgan, Jerry Burkett and Jason Burge.
