Edgar Walker Obituary

Edgar John Walker, age 75, of Lumberton, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. He was born in Port Arthur, TX, on July 25, 1947, to Edgar Maurice and Ella Vaughn Walker.

To him, there was always opportunity to apply his vigor and determined mindset, because there was always somewhere to go and something to do; he liked it that way. Johnny was always on the go, always building something, always working on a project. He was uninhibited by obstacles that slow many, trying to stay as busy as possible or to find another road for his adventurous spirit to travel. He hardly liked to frequent the same place twice and would never go somewhere and return without a story. Though stern raising his children, he loved his family completely. When he and Melissa became “Papaw” and “Mimi”, he fell in love all over again. He had a soft spot for his grandchildren that would bring him to do the funniest things and devoted himself to their happiness. Frugality was extremely important to him, and he managed his money closely, though if he knew there was someone truly in need, Johnny would not hesitate to provide for those in need in any way that he was able. A wonderful cook, he was known for his gumbo, pork and rice, and a few other notables. Even as he grew older, Johnny remained as tough as nails through many things, being there for those he loved. He would often tell his grandchildren, when asked why he had to go see the doctor, “Baby, it’s because Papaw is too sweet”, explaining that the hospital was going to try and fix it. As he passed from this life, Johnny leaves with his loved ones many special memories they will forever cherish.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Melissa Walker; son, James Walker; daughter, Cassie Marshall; adopted daughter, Faith Powell and husband, Mike; sister, Agnes Walker and Letha Hawkins; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nephews, Michael Walker, Donny Walker, and Danny Walker; niece, Kim Walker; daughter-in-law, Hilary Walker; and a host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.

Preceding Edgar in death are his parents; sons, Anthony Walker and Austin Walker; and brother, Dolph Walker.
