Allen Lee Downey, age 81, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025. He was born on August 30, 1943, in Creston, IA.

There was no mold for this man, he was unique, a commanding presence with an aura of strength and resilience. He was quiet and modest in his speech yet mighty in character; Allen was a gentle giant whose way of living taught us that there was not only the right way or the wrong way, but always the Allen Downey way. Born in Iowa and later making Texas his home, Allen embraced life with a thoughtful passion for the simple pleasures. Whether he was repurposing old items into newfound treasures or quietly enjoying the peace and warmth of nature, he found meaning. His hands and mind were dedicated to crafting practical solutions, breathing new life into objects that others might have discarded. Allen met the love of his life, Vanna, on a blind date at the beach, a destined pairing that fulfilled her wish for a blonde-haired, blue-eyed companion. Their wedding on August 14, 1964, marked the beginning of a shared journey blessed with two beloved sons and countless cherished memories. His deep, unwavering commitment to his family was matched only by his dedication to his work and his friends. A master fisherman, Allen could often be found out on the water. He enjoyed good food, like fried chicken, fried fish, and fried potatoes. And if Vanna ever managed to fry mud, you can be sure that Allen would have gladly indulged. His love for good food, nature, and life’s simple pleasures symbolized a man who knew the true value of living well. Known to his coworkers simply as "The Legend”, for 38 years Allen dedicated himself faithfully to Goodyear, where his exacting standards and methodical approach earned him the respect of all who worked with him. Even in retirement since 2005, his influence endured in the small details and familiar routines that so many admired. He was respected by all that knew him, for his strength, intelligence, and character. Allen was a beacon of stability and originality, a quiet force whose influence will continue to be felt in the hearts of family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his extraordinary way of being.

Left to honor his memory is his wife, Vanna Duncan Downey; sons, John Downey, and Mat Downey and wife, Crystal; mother, Nita Deane Kester; brothers, Ralph Kester Jr. and wife, Debbie, and Tom Kester; sisters, Janet Johnson, and Sheryl Noble and significant other, Jim Taylor; grandchildren, Vanessa Downey and fiancé, Caleb Hendrix, Lauren Barger and husband, Ethan, Zoe Keel, Zackary Moore, and Cameron Downey; great grandchildren, Ezra Barger, Asher Barger, and Blair Barger; and a host of family, friends, and loved ones.

Preceding Allen in death is his father, Ralph Kester Sr.
