1949 – 2018

Ricky Lee Munson, age 69, of Evadale, TX, passed away on December 21, 2018. He was born to Bobby Ray Munson and Irma Lee Shaw Munson on September 24, 1949 in Beaumont, TX.

A cool, down-to-earth man, Rick had a heart the size of Texas. Slow to anger in his later years, everyone got along with Rick; he lived in the moment and was never in a hurry, often saying “Life’s too short to be in a hurry”. For most of his life, he was devoted to his passion for fishing. Many fond memories were made on his fishing trips with his family. When his daughters were growing up, many early mornings were spent teaching them to catch bait and, after they got home, how to clean the fish they caught. One of his finest catches over the years was a large, 32-pound black drum that he caught after holding the pole for his wife. Catching fish was not enough for Rick, it was his favorite meal too; he ate fried shrimp and catfish from the Get n’ Go in Evadale every Friday and loved to go with family to his favorite restaurant, Cheddar’s, for some Blackened Catfish. One of his favorite sports was football, and he looked forward to the NFL season each year. An avid Rock n’ Roll fan, he would air drum down the highway to his favorite songs, enjoying many of the classic and modern bands. “Papaw Rick” loved his grandkids: taking them fishing and just being the all-around cool grandfather. He would go above and beyond for those he loved, giving you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. He was not afraid of death, for he knew his destination. Rick’s memory will always have a place in the heart of his family and friends.

Left to honor his memory are daughters, Tonya Munson and fiancé, Keith Jarrell, of Vidor, TX and Stacy Ashworth and husband, Tommy, of Buna, TX; grandchildren, Justin Beaver of Colorado Springs, CO, Hunter Ashworth of Evadale, TX, Haylee Ashworth of Lumberton, TX and Holden Ashworth of Buna, TX; sisters, Bethel Phillips of Houston, TX and Shawn Douglas; and brothers, Bobby Ray Munson, Jr. of Laredo, TX and Michael Munson of Huntsville, TX

Preceding Rick in death were his parents and a grandson, Jakob Aaron Munson.

Visitation with family and friends will be 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2018, at Lumberton Family Funeral Home, 766 S. Main St. Lumberton, TX. Rick’s life honoring service will follow at 6:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.
