Michael Edwards Obituary

Michael “Mike” Edwards

1952 - 2019

Michael Edwards, age 66, passed away on May 6, 2019. He was born in Beaumont, TX on September 16. 1952 to Clarence Edwards Sr. and Annie Mae Brown Edwards.

With a joyful spirit and a giving heart, Mike was happy and loved to make others happy. He would do anything for anybody, constantly finding ways to take care of the needs of his family, friends and complete strangers. Thoughtful and selfless, he paid attention to the details, and would often be found checking on his loved ones. After his father passed away, he took up his mantle as the organizer of family gatherings, letting everyone know “I’m cooking Sunday” and that any were welcome to join. Cooking was a special way that Mike could give of himself, a way for him to express his care and desire to bring happiness. If there was an opportunity to feed people, Mike happily accepted the challenge, no matter how large the crowd: cooking for his church and supporting benefits; tailgating at his grandson’s ballgames; and organizing the annually anticipated “Good Friday” family fish fry, where turtle, fish and shrimp were in plentiful supply. Mike was unwaveringly committed to giving, and he truly gave and gave of himself. From his youth, Mike was serious about his faith and loved the Lord; singing throughout his life in the choir and men’s chorus, he committed himself to the Gospel and his church family. His favorite thing in this life was his family, and he was always with them. “Pawpaw” or “Papa”, as Mike was known to them, loved his grandkids and cherished spending time with them, even driving to Florida to help care for his son Jamichael’s children over the summer. As he approached the end of his mortal journey, Mike was still concerned with others, bringing smiles and laughter to the nurses at the hospital, and expressing the peace and joy in his heart, he reminded his family of how much he loved them and that he did not want to be a burden. The taste of Mike’s barbecue and salmon croquettes, the memory of his pure smile and constant joy, and the impact of his enduring devotion to those that he loved, will be fondly cherished and missed. Mike finished his race on this Earth well; though he will be missed, he exited this World and opened his eyes in Heaven, singing passionately as he would at church “Good bye World, I’m going home…I’m on my way to see Jesus.”

Left to honor his memory are his daughters, Tina Edwards-Hebert and husband, Russell, of Beaumont, TX and Lisa Rivon of Beaumont, TX; son, Jamichael Semien of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters, Georgeanna Lewis, Shirley Martin, Linda Simon, Deborah Frank, Sherry Hampton, Annette McCray and husband, Sherman, Jannette Herring, Rachel Edwards and Faye Morris and husband, Donald; brothers, Clarence Edwards Jr. and wife, Brenda, Tony Edwards and wife, Mary, Jerry Edwards and wife, Vanessa, and Richard Edwards; 3 grandchildren, Kendrick King, Tahji Edwards and Cheryln Semien; 2 step-grandchildren, Alexis Cooper and Ian Cooper; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents.
