Joyce D. Snyder

Joyce Darlene Snyder, age 84, passed away on January, 14 2019. She was born in Carlisle, PA on August 21, 1934 to Robert L. Calaman and Maude V. Calaman.

Joyce’s smile was contagious and ever present, while she found joy in everything she did, her greatest joy was her family. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, never missing school and church functions that their family was involved in. No distance was too far to keep Joyce from a sick child or grandchild; during Van’s battle with cancer, she would travel to him and spend multiple days a week with him.  Joyce was raised in the small town of Carlisle, PA, where she attended high school and on October 10, 1952 she married the love of her life, Paul Edward Snyder; together, they cherished 63 years of marriage. She and Paul were avid sports fans, they attended every game for the Groveton Indians for several years and loved watching the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers. Her wide variety of hobbies proved how interesting she truly was; from oil painting and gardening to being a strong bowler with multiple perfect games. She possessed a love for people that was unmistakable which lead her to volunteer at the Groveton nursing home, the historical museum, and a thrift shop. She and Paul also were teachers of the senior youth class at St. Andrews Presbyterian in Beaumont, TX and later attended First Presbyterian in Lufkin, TX. Joyce was a pillar to her family and a shoulder to cry on. She will be missed dearly by her family and remembered greatly, as she was.

Left to honor her memory are her daughters, Sharon Landon of Lumberton, TX, Karen Barrow of Lumberton, TX, Brenda Munns and husband, Kevin, of Onalaska, WI; brothers, Marlin L. Calaman and wife, Betty of Carlisle, PA, Rodney P. Calaman and wife, Helen of Carlisle, PA, Larry D. Calaman of Carlisle, PA; half sisters, Cathy Junk and Wendy Fitting of Carlisle, PA; sister-in-laws, Catherine Calaman  of Carlisle, PA,  Marcia Calaman of Shippensburg, PA, Magee Snyder of Daytona Beach, FL, as well as 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband; Paul; brothers, Donald E. Calaman and Robert L. Calaman Jr; half-brother, Artie Calaman; son-in-laws, Van Ridley and Joe Landon; niece, Debbie Calaman Sweeney.

A service honoring the life of Joyce Snyder will be held at the Lumberton Family Funeral Home on Wednesday January 16, 2019 at 5 pm. The address is 766 S. Main Lumberton, TX, 77657
