Gerald G. Barefield

Gerald Glenn Barefield, 76, of Hamshire, passed away on January 4, 2015. He was born on January 18, 1938, to Benjamin Franklin Barefield and Pearl Owens Barefield, in Decalbe, Mississippi. As a young boy in junior high he raised calves in FFA. Then in his later years of high school he rode bulls in the rodeo and was even captain of a tug boat, from his senior year until the age of 29. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting pool, shooting skeet, and even raised Labrador retrievers, training them for duck hunting. When getting together with friends he liked playing games, with Phase 10 being a favorite. When the Dallas Cowboys were playing all else stopped. He worked 30 years in the chemical plant industry before retiring.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 47 years, Mary Barefield of Hamshire, Texas; daughters, Kathy Barefield and fiancée, Clyde Leet, of Hamshire, Becky Burns and husband, Louis, of San Antonio, Texas and Sandra Mott and husband, Bobby, of Fannett, Texas; grandchildren, Kevin Watts, Ryan Burns, Kyler Kirkland, Laura Little, Witney Burns, Brianna Kirkland, and Ethan Mott; great-grandson, Greyson Kirkland; sisters, Cecile Mason of Silsbee and Linda Hughes and husband, Mark, of Jasper; brothers, James Barefield and wife, Linda, of Kirbyville, Wayne Barefield and wife, Susan, of Beaumont and Gayle Barefield and wife, Helen, of New York; special friends, Briana Stephenson, Ted and Pat Mitchell; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Gerald was preceded in death by his grandson, Kenneth Watts; parents, Ben and Pearl Barefield; and brother, Neuva Barefield.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at Lumberton Family Funeral Home. His life honoring graveside service will be Thursday, January 8, at 10:00 a.m. in Kirbyville City Cemetery. Donations may be made to ALZ.org in his name.
