Cathryne Grace Melton, 98, of Lumberton, passed away Monday, September 19, 2016. She was born in Pharr, Texas December 23, 1917 to Stanley Thomas Melton and Grace Raffen Melton. She was a member of the Methodist Episcapal Church South in Pharr, Texas as a child. After graduating from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School, she attended Edinburg Junior College and then went on to the University of Texas School of Business Administration, Austin, Texas. While attending college, she was a member of the Delta Psi Omega, Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma and Gamma Phi Beta where she became a national officer after receiving her BBA degree. Cathryne maintained her alumna’s contact through her adult life. She was also a charter member of GR P.E. O. Sisterhood in San Antonio, Texas.

After college, she went to work for R. W. Briggs and moved from Pharr, Texas to San Antonio, Texas when his office relocated. At her retirement, she was Corporate Secretary Treasurer of the Fordyce Company and Victoria Ready Mix Concrete Co., Inc. She was a very active member of Jefferson Methodist Church in San Antonio; and taught an Adult Sunday School Class for 45 years before making it to Lumberton, Texas. In Lumberton, Cathryne joined Woodcrest Methodist Church, where she was an active member. She dimitted to Chapter CC P.E.O. Sisterhood in Beaumont, Texas.

Cathryne loved to travel. She made numerous trips all over the world, her first being her beloved England where she visited 11 times.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Ella Beth Beane and her husband, Kenneth Glenn Beane of Port Arthur, Texas, her nephew, David Clark Beane of Lumberton, Texas and her sister of choice, Eugenia Gray of Houston, Texas.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her nephew, James Coleman Beane and his wife, Sheila of Houston, Texas, her niece, Janice Broussard Beane Cammack and her husband, John of Lumberton, Texas, great nephews, Chris Beane and his wife, April of Lumberton, Texas, and Scott Beane and his wife Candie of Las Vegas, Nevada, great-great nieces, Whitney and Kelby Beane of Lumberton, Texas and all of Cathryne’s many beloved friends.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday September 27, 2016 at Woodcrest United Methodist Church of Lumberton, officiated by Pastor Charles Jordan.
